I was back in the studio with WBIR as a panelist for the Sunday morning show “Inside Tennessee” this week, contemplating the election of Pope Leo XIV and future of the Catholic Church.

While much remains to be seen regarding just how the new pope will lead the Church, we can look to the legacy of Pope Francis and longer-term trends in the sociology of Catholicism to ask good questions and frame what we can know.

I’m grateful for my time with both Pope Francis and (not-yet) Pope Leo XIV during the Synod on Synodality in Rome last October. Social science has much to speak into this moment in the Church — and so much more to learn. Energized to be among those asking and answering questions through this lens.
