Continuing the work and dialogue of synodality, I was honored to contribute to an Oxford gathering of synod participants and observers invested in understanding the historical, cultural, and theological significance of the 2021-2024 Synod on Synodality.
Thanks to support from The Culture of Encounter project at Georgetown University and the Road to a Synodal Church project at Campion Hall, Oxford, panels explored the “what” and “so what” of the synod experience for the global Catholic Church. Blackfriars Hall, Oxford, and the Initiative for Catholic Social Thought and Public Life at Georgetown University also co-sponsored the event.
Our convening spurred reflections from myself alongside participants Thomas Banchoff, Jose V Casanova, Tomas Halik, Austen Ivereigh, Cardinal Timothy Radcliffe, Kim Daniels, Birgit Weiler, Anna Rowlands, and attendees. The Tablet offered this summary of public components, including the lively keynote by Cardinal Radcliffe. Conversations over dinner and post-dinner port in Campion Hall’s library were also highlights.
I look forward to further developing initiatives and ideas spawned by our time together and the ongoing momentum of synodality in global Catholicism.
