Taking Religion Seriously


Chiding sociologists for their all-too-common failure to seriously engage religion, Christian Smith (University of Notre Dame) offers a needed reprimand in the current issue of Footnotes (American Sociological Association). “It is time to take religion just as seriously as everything else humanly social, and time to make the effort to learn complicated facts,” writes Smith.   1. Completely agree. Must needed chiding, indeed. One of my colleagues said he felt the words were too strong,frankly, I think it was well deserved and quite civil, in fact. And more anecdotal evidence of the prejudice towards those who study sociology of religion: I feel I have to hide my identity to post here.
